Football has a way of humbling even the most dominant sides, and the last two results for Olympiacos FC are a reminder of that reality, rather than an indictment of performance or intent.
The 1-0 home defeat to Panathinaikos, followed by the 0-0 draw away to Levadiakos, will inevitably invite scrutiny. However, a closer look at the numbers and the overall flow of both matches tells a far more balanced and reasonable story.
Against Panathinaikos, Olympiacos controlled long stretches of the match, created the clearer chances, and forced the opposition into a largely reactive role. The outcome was decided by a single moment, while at the other end, clear opportunities went begging. These are chances that are converted more often than not across a full season. On another night, one of those efforts finds the net and the conversation looks completely different.
A glaring miss in front of goal by Gelson Martins summed up the frustration and only amplified the disappointment felt by supporters.
The same pattern was evident in the 0-0 draw with Levadiakos. Olympiacos dominated possession once again and fashioned high quality chances that, on most occasions, would be enough to secure all three points.

This is where perspective matters. Football seasons are not defined by isolated results, but by trends over time. Statistics can be useful, but selectively pointing the finger rarely tells the full story.
Performances like these, where matches are controlled, chances are created, and the opposition is limited, usually lead to positive outcomes. Sometimes though, the ball simply refuses to co-operate.
Blame is an easy reaction after results like these, but it misses the bigger picture. If even one of the major chances across the two matches is taken, these games are not being debated at all. They are simply accepted as performances that earned their reward.
What is staggering is how quickly finger pointing has begun from top to bottom and everywhere in between. Every season there are four clubs whose owners and supporters demand a league title, yet only one can achieve it. Past success has perhaps spoiled us into believing everything should come easily in Greece. Football does not work that way, and sometimes the football gods refuse to play along.
Olympiacos have not suddenly forgotten how to play. They have simply experienced the harsh and unpredictable side of the game.
With the play-offs looming, hopefully the boys can overcome their yips and get back to winnings way.
That… is the beautiful game.
